Government School Preparatory Course

As a multi-ethnic country, English is the language of communication amongst each race in Singapore. It is taught as a first language to all children from young. With the exception of Mother Tongue (Mandarin, Malay or Tamil), it is the main medium used in all lessons from pre-school to university.

As such, many foreign students may face some difficulties when they choose to study in Singapore, especially if they come from countries where English is not taught as the first language, Before any student is allowed enrollment into any school or institution in Singapore, the student usually has to sit and pass an entrance examination to assess his or her competency in the English Language and Mathematics. The entrance examination is usually held in January, February, March, September, October, November and December.

Students may choose to take this Preparatory Course for the purpose of admission into a government school in Singapore. They may also take the Preparatory Course (English intensive) as a prerequisite for our O Level Preparatory Course.

English
English will be the focus in this Preparatory Course, both as a subject in itself and as a medium for learning other subjects. Besides knowing the education system and syllabus laid down by the Ministry of Education in Singapore, our experience and qualified teachers are able to understand the difficulties students face and assist them in overcoming these problems. Students will be taught the skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking English.

Mathematics
Our educators will teach the students according to the syllabus laid down by the Ministry of Education. Students will be taught formulae, mathematical terms and concepts, all of which will be done in English.

All students will be taught up to the academic level in preparation for the entrance examination they have signed up for.

Preparation for the Entrance Examination
As students need to attain the required standard in a given time, students have to complete numerous assignments as well as put in hours of self study. Besides the personal coaching and guidance of our educators as well as the motivation of the students, we would appreciate if parents or guardians could be involved.

To monitor the students’ progress, monthly tests will be given. Advice will be given to help the students improve. Parents and guardians will be advised on the choice of school the students should enroll into.

Pre-requisites
This course is for students who wish to enter school in Singapore at either primary 1-5 or secondary 1-3. Schools here normally do not accept students entering at Primary 6 or Secondary 4 due to the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) or GCE ‘O’ Level Examination (O Level) respectively. Students who wish to enter Junior College are advised to take our O Level Preparatory Course.

Students intending to enroll into a government school in Singapore need to perform well in the school entrance examination. Their age, academic results, diligence and self motivation are some factors that will determine their choice of school and level they can enter.

Students need to be between 7 to 18 years of age for this course or up to 23 years old if they are attending the O level or A level preparatory course.

To help each student better prepare for this Preparatory Course, our Centre will administer an entrance examination to ascertain the English language ability of the student.
