The subject, Language Arts, employs an integrative approach to teaching students the English language and the Arts, namely Literature through texts, drama and project work, amongst other modes of learning. This subject aims to develop a student’s creativity, confidence, analysis and application skills to relate language to other fields of knowledge and disciplines.
Offered to students taking the Integrated Program (IP) more often than not, certain schools taking the O level track may offer this to their lower secondary students. As it is in essence a combination of two main subjects (English and Literature), students are required to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English in addition to the academic know-how of reading Literature.
Apart from the necessary knowledge required to do comprehension and essay in English, students need to know how to identify and employ the use of the literary devices when analysing certain texts.
As schools have the autonomy to choose the texts for this subject, students coming to the centre for tuition may not be able to enroll into group tuition unless there are sufficient students studying the same text can make up a class. Otherwise, the norm would most likely be for individual tuition. Sufficient time needs to be given for the tutor to read and analyse the text.
